new knee, new beginnings

Snowdonia Delivers Stunning Winter Conditions

The recent spell of snow across Snowdonia and the wider Eryri National Park has delivered some truly cracking winter conditions. Clear blue skies combined with fresh snowfall have transformed the landscape into a photographer’s dream, with sharp contrast, crisp air, and exceptional visibility across the peaks.

For those lucky enough to get out, it’s been one of those rare windows where everything aligns, with snow, light, and atmosphere creating some of the best winter mountain conditions seen across the UK this year.

Perfect Conditions for Landscape Photography

These kinds of conditions are exactly what landscape photographers hope for. Snow adds depth and contrast, while blue skies provide clean, vibrant backdrops that make compositions stand out.

A Pause for Recovery

Unfortunately, while the mountains were looking their best, it was time to deal with something a little less scenic - the “old” knee finally called time, and surgery was needed.

The experience, however, couldn’t have been better. The care received at Ysbyty Gwynedd was excellent from start to finish, and being back on feet shortly after the operation was a huge positive.

It’s a reminder of how important good healthcare is, especially for those who spend a lot of time outdoors and rely on physical mobility.

The Road Back: Rehab and Rebuilding Strength

Now comes the steady part—recovery.

The focus has shifted to gradually building up walking distance, regaining strength in the gym, and restoring full mobility. It’s not the fast-paced return to the hills that anyone would hope for, but it’s a necessary process to ensure long-term fitness and resilience - and daily icing of the knee.....

Realistically, by the time full strength returns, the snow will have long disappeared from the mountains. But that’s no bad thing.

Looking Ahead to Summer in the Hills

With winter conditions fading, attention turns to the months ahead. Summer brings its own opportunities, longer days, stable weather windows, and the chance to get properly hill fit again.

New Photography Projects and Opportunities

Alongside recovery, some exciting photography projects have started to come into view. New ideas, collaborations, and opportunities are beginning to open up, suggesting this year could take an interesting direction creatively.

These kinds of projects often lead to further doors opening new locations, new people, and fresh perspectives behind the lens. Even during downtime, momentum can still build in different ways.

A Positive Outlook

While missing out on prime winter conditions is never ideal, the bigger picture remains positive. Strong recovery, future fitness goals, and new creative opportunities all point towards a solid year ahead.

By the time the hills are calling again in summer, the focus will be on being stronger, more prepared, and ready to make the most of it.

Happy snapping,
